Breast reduction surgery is generally something that women will spend years thinking about before they actually consult with a surgeon. Choosing to have surgery is not an easy decision for most women but it helps to know what to expect to make the process easier.

What is breast reduction surgery?

During breast reduction surgery, excess tissue and fat are removed from the breasts in order to achieve a more proportional size and eliminate any health issues that the patient might be experiencing.

Is breast reduction surgery right for me?

There are a number of reasons why women choose to undergo breast reduction surgery, including:

– Unwanted attention.Unfortunately, large breasts come with a lot of unwanted attention, a factor that causes countless women to seek this specific type of surgery

– Nerve and back pain. Along with constant back pain, some women will also experience numbness in the hands and arms because of the weight of their breasts

– Aesthetics. Women with larger breasts can find it difficult to find clothing that fits properly and looks good too

– Headaches. Tension in the shoulders and back can cause regular headaches

– Physical limitations. Women with larger breasts can find it difficult to exercise or play specific sports

– Skin issues. Rashes and dermatitis can occur under the breasts when they’re overly large

What to expect during surgery

Your surgeon at Ritz Plastic Surgery will be able to explain the breast reduction procedure to you in detail as your unique body shape is a factor. There are three types of incisions that could be used during this surgery:

  1. Anchor incision: Made in the crease of the breasts
  2. Circle incision: Made around the areola
  3. Keyhole incision: Vertical incision made from the breast to the areola

Once an incision is made, the nipple will be repositioned in such a way that it’s still attached to its nerve and blood supply. Excess tissue is removed before the breast is reshaped and the incisions closed.

What to expect during recovery

Most breast reduction patients can return to work within 2 to 3 weeks but swelling and bruising can last for up to 4 months.

Patients should also refrain from doing any rigorous exercises for up to 6 weeks following their surgery.

You won’t see results immediately as you will need to wait for the swelling to subside but your breasts will eventually look smaller and firmer and feel lighter.

Breast reduction complications

As with any surgical procedure, there is always a risk of complications, including:

– Uneven nipples
Scarring
– Loss of sensation
– Uneven breasts
– Inability to breastfeed

Choosing a qualified and experienced board-certified surgeon does minimise the risk of complications though, which is why it’s important to do your homework and to consult with more than one surgeon.

If you have any further questions or concerns about the breast reduction procedure, bring them up with your surgeon during your consultation.
